What Even Is a Bad Website?
During our competitor research, we saw some REALLY bad websites. But what even is a bad website? Let’s break it down.
What a Bad Website Consists Of:
1. Poor Navigation
Ever landed on a site and felt lost within seconds? That’s what poor navigation does. It’s like walking into a maze with no way out. Accessible navigation is key, but sadly, we saw too many sites where this just wasn’t happening.
2. No Information
Crafting a website that provides clear, valuable information without leaving visitors with more questions than answers is an art. And unfortunately, it’s an art that seems to be fading.
3. Slow Load Times
We found pages running upwards of 10mb. That’s painfully slow. If your site is over 5mb per page, you’re in the danger zone. Speed matters. In this fast-paced world, no one has time to wait around for your site to load.
4. Lack of Structure
Designers seem to be focusing more on aesthetics than user experience. At The Bear, we’ve been there too. But after practice, education, and a lot of refinement, we’ve learned to trim back the excess. Now, our site is like walking through a beautiful, accessible story that anyone can enjoy.
A Challenge to Fellow Designers:
I’m coming for you. These built-in-a-day websites are destroying user experience as we know it. We have to do better. Every single site I reviewed left me questioning whether the designers even realized the barriers they’ve built, making it so hard for visitors to connect. Don’t be so unapproachable that you MISS connections. It’s costing our industry dearly. Let’s get back to the basics: provide the information people are actually looking for and make it easy for them to reach out.
