Are You Taking Care of You? - The Bear’s Guide to Self-Care
This has been a HARD month. Why? I'm not sure. I feel like it’s been thing after thing after thing and like I’m barely keeping my head above water! I know I’m maintaining a handful of jobs, including my own little small business, just to keep everything going- but dang it has been hard!
As a small business owner, your days are often filled with juggling endless tasks, managing deadlines, and navigating the unpredictable challenges of entrepreneurship. In the midst of this whirlwind, it's easy to neglect the most important asset of your business—you.
Let’s talk about something that often gets pushed to the bottom of our to-do lists: self-care.
Self-care isn't just a luxury; it's a critical investment in your well-being and the sustainability of your business. Join us as we explore practical tips, ideas, and hacks to help you prioritize wellness and self-care, and thrive as a small business owner.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “I barely have time to breathe, let alone take care of myself!” But trust me, even bears take breaks from hibernation to stretch and recharge, and we should too.
Have you heard of the spoon theory before? Imagine that our energy is like a handful of spoons. Each activity we do throughout the day, whether it’s replying to emails, attending meetings, or brainstorming new ideas, costs us a spoon. As small business owners, we often have a limited number of spoons to work with, especially when we’re juggling multiple responsibilities. That’s why it’s essential to manage our spoons wisely and prioritize activities that replenish our energy. I live by this theory, and you’ll regularly hear me say how many spoons i have at any given moment!
Here are a few bear-approved tips to integrate self-care into your busy schedule while managing your spoons effectively:
Set Boundaries: Like a bear marking their territory- establish clear boundaries between work and personal life to prevent burnout and maintain balance. Define designated work hours, limit after-hours emails and calls, and prioritize time for rest, relaxation, and leisure activities. Get that work-life balance!
Schedule Breaks: Incorporate regular breaks into your workday to recharge and rejuvenate. Take short walks, practice deep breathing exercises, or indulge in a quick mindfulness meditation session to clear your mind and boost productivity. The world wants to tell you that everything has to have been done last week for you to be successful. That’s just not the case. This isn’t a sprint, this journey is meant to be just that. A beautiful journey that doesn’t suck the life out of you with every step. Stop and smell the flowers. Have a meditative moment. Scream your favorite song. Take that time. You owe it to yourself and to your business.
Delegate Tasks: Recognize that you can't do it all and delegate tasks that don't require your immediate attention. Outsource repetitive or time-consuming tasks to freelancers, virtual assistants, or automation tools, allowing you to focus on high-priority activities and strategic initiatives. It’s okay to ask for help 😉 and when you’re worried that it won’t get done “just right”, remember what Anna says almost every day, “Imperfect is better than not done.”
Prioritize Health: Make your physical and mental health a top priority. Schedule regular exercise, prioritize nutritious meals, stay hydrated, and get adequate sleep to support your overall well-being. Remember, a healthy body and mind are essential for sustained productivity and creativity. I can give you a whole list of what movement does for the body (improved sleep, improved emotion management, and gets the creative brain juices flowing are just a few!).
Practice Mindfulness: Cultivate mindfulness practices to reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and enhance focus. Incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, journaling, or gratitude exercises into your daily routine to improve mental clarity and resilience. Sometimes taking that extra moment to cross t’s and dot i’s, gives you the space to heal and actually breathe again.
Unplug Regularly: Take intentional breaks from technology to disconnect from digital distractions and recharge your batteries. Designate tech-free periods, such as evenings or weekends, to enjoy quality time with loved ones, pursue hobbies, or simply unwind without the constant (and we know it do be constant) buzz of notifications.
Invest in Self-Development: Allocate time and resources to invest in your personal and professional growth. Attend workshops, seminars, or online courses to acquire new skills, expand your knowledge base, and stay ahead of industry trends. Remember, investing in yourself is an investment in the success of your business. You’re allowed to treat yourself without feeling guilty. Also? You can invest in some chocolate. That’s personal growth, right? I think so.
Create a Support System: Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family members, mentors, and fellow entrepreneurs who understand the challenges of small business ownership. Lean on your support system for guidance, encouragement, and emotional support during both triumphs and setbacks. Real talk: you do not have to buy something from us for us to support you. The Bear is ALWAYS here for you. We are so happy to be your support team, to be sad with you, celebrate with you, and we will also happily go to war with you if you need us to. You don’t have to do this alone.
Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Take pride in your accomplishments, reflect on your progress, and reward yourself for reaching milestones along your entrepreneurial journey. Celebrating successes reinforces positive habits and motivates you to continue striving for excellence. Want someone to celebrate with you? Hit us up. We’re ready to throw confetti.
Embrace Imperfection: Embrace the idea that perfection is not attainable and that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. Allow yourself grace and compassion when things don't go as planned, and focus on continuous improvement rather than striving for unattainable perfection. One day at a time, love.
In the hustle of small business ownership, maintaining work-life balance often feels elusive. Yet, neglecting self-care only compounds the challenges we face. As entrepreneurs, prioritizing our well-being isn't a luxury; it's essential for long-term success. By setting boundaries, scheduling breaks, delegating tasks, and embracing imperfection, we can nurture ourselves while cultivating thriving businesses. Remember, investing in self-care isn't selfish—it's a wise strategy for sustainability. So, take a moment to breathe, celebrate your achievements, and lean on your support system. By prioritizing self-care, you're not just nurturing yourself; you're laying the groundwork for your business's flourishing future. We love you. Go take care of you. 🐻
